The director of this production conceptualized the characters of Brothers M. as abstractions of characters from the story of Alice in Wonderland. I saw the world of the play as a fluid space that only existed when and where the characters were present; their existence in the space caused the environment to materialize. In order to execute this idea with light, I chose to wash the stage with a saturated blue until a character entered and thereby created the actual environment of the play. As they entered an area of the stage it would transition in to the actual location light, this followed them as they moved through space, all while the uninhabited regions remained and returned to the intense blue. The character's also had a number of moments where they described an alternate setting and reality. For these moments their thoughts would take over their reality and change the lighting of the world.
