The Laramie Project
Directed by Robert McDonald

The Laramie Project was my first effort as a lighting designer since my formal education in the art of lighting design began. The director chose to incorporate a number of Brechtian elements and modified the script heavily. After studying the works of Brecht, I chose to depart from the literal representation of specific locations. Instead, I chose three distinct lighting looks to reflect the progression of tension throughout the play. The first look was a friendly warm interior; this was used in the first half the play. The second look was a pale lavender. It carried some of the friendly qualities of the first look but was more ambiguous and less natural. The third and final look was a stark pale white. In practice the monochromatic cool light gave the final scenes a harshness that was matched by the intensity of the acting. This look matched the harshness as well as evoking a sense of clarity and justice in the final moments of the play.
